Apparently the bullet hole is actually in JHW’s buttock, hence for the benefit of lady readers he transferred it to his shoulder on first mention. There is also a well devised explanation for why his wife addresses him as James rather than John: his middle name is of course H for Hamish, which is the Gaelic version of James.
